A single father of three who was deeply in debt and had only £4.61 in his bank account committed suicide after waiting weeks for Universal Credit.
While seeking employment, falling behind on his rent, and attempting to pay off £20,000 in debts, including payday loans with over 1,000 per cent interest, Phillip Herron, 34, was also trying to maintain his family.
He asked the government for help, but the month-long wait for Universal Credit led to him accruing more debt. He had reached the breaking point, according to his distraught mother Sheena Derbyshire, 54.
On March 18, Phillip’s final act was to publish a picture of himself crying while driving down a tranquil country road and upload it to social media. He eventually passed away.
