Chris Daughtry And Wife Deanna Use New Song As You Are To Reveal She Is Bisexual

Singer Chris Daughtry and his wife Deanna have used his new song to reveal she is bisexual.

‘As You Are’ is based on a poem that Deanna wrote, which shared one of her deepest secrets with the world. She never intended for it to become a single. Deanna simply handed the poem to her singer husband and let him decide if it was good or not.

“She basically said, ‘If this inspires you, feel free to use it. She kind of downplayed it and walked away, which made me want to read it even more,” recalled Chris to People magazine.

The American Idol alum quickly realized his wife had given him something extraordinary, her story. Chris began to form the words into a lovely ballad that showcases Deanna’s life-long struggle with being bisexual, which she is now finally able to embrace. The chorus “I love you as you are,” is a true expression of how the 46-year-old feels today.

Although ‘As You Are,’ which is the first single off of Chris’ latest album Cage to Rattle, is Deanna’s coming out story, her husband has known for years. One of the first things she revealed to him when they met over 19-years ago was she had been in relationships with both men and women.

“I didn’t care. I didn’t feel threatened. I wanted her to be happy with who she was and not hide that or be ashamed,” the singer expressed regarding learning her secret when he was only 20-years-old.

Deanna admitted one of the reasons she is coming out now is because she is tired of hiding and shutting down part of herself.

“I built these walls up to protect myself, I was creating a prison, and I couldn’t fully experience life, and people couldn’t fully experience me, and it’s all based on fear,” she shared of her journey.

Chris Daughtry and wife Deanna’s life drastically changed when he placed fourth on American Idol back in 2006. Fear over keeping her secret mounted as their lives became more public, forcing Deanna into therapy after she began to isolate herself from everyone, including Chris.

In 2015, she finally learned self-acceptance and captured the moment with a declaration of writing. She has used lyric-writing as an outlet for years. Deanna wasted no time giving the words to her hubby, and a new hit song was born.

“It’s very important for people to know what the song is about and where it really came from. Otherwise, we’re not being authentic with the song,” Chris shared soon after their song ‘As You Are’ was released.
